AMMONNEWS - Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, Atef Tarawneh, Thursday stressed the importance of developing Jordanian-Syrian relations to achieve the aspirations and interests of the two brotherly peoples.

During a meeting with the Syrian Charge D'Affaires, Shafiq Diob, who recently assumed his duties, Tarawneh said Amman and Damascus' historical relations are cause for boosting them.

Over the years of the Syrian crisis, Jordan remained keen on the unity of Syria and its people, and rejected attempts to keep the country at a war that left a trail of destruction in its wake, which has served terrorists and extremists, until the Syrian army was able to defeat them recently, Tarawneh noted.

He reiterated Jordan's position on the crisis which is in favor of a political solution that preserves the unity of Syria and guarantees the return of refugees, pointing out that Jordan received over 1.3 million Syrian refugees.

On the Golan Heights, Tarawneh affirmed the Kingdom's clear stance on the United States' unilateral decision to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, noting that the they are an occupied Syrian territory according to international legitimacy resolutions which prohibit confiscating land by force.

For his part, the Syrian Charge D'Affaires affirmed his country's keenness to enhance the Jordanian-Syrian ties, stressing that his government is pushing to boost bilateral relations in various fields to serve the interests of the two brotherly peoples.

Giving an update on Syria, he said the situation has become more stable, as the Syrian army is achieving "victories," which motivates the return of Syrian refugees.
