ACCEM said the resettlements were taking place due to Jordan and Turkey not being able to guarantee the refugees’ asylum. “Resettlement is a safe haven for refugees. ACCEM continues to defend the provision of safe routes so that refugees can find a safe place to protect themselves from war, violence and persecution from those who have been forced to flee,” the NGO said. There are 89 refugees per every 1,000 people living in Jordan, the second highest proportion in the world according to the latest data from the UN. More than 660,000 out of more than 750,000 of refugees in Jordan are Syrian. An estimated 5.6 million people have fled Syria since the start of the country’s civil war in 2011. Separately, the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) said only 320 of the 4,860 2018 applications for asylum from people in Central America had been resolved.
