Cold weather continues Tuesday, polar depression starts Wednesday

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A slight rise in temperatures is expected on Tuesday, but cold conditions will remain in the hilly areas and plains, while it will be fair in the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea with low clouds and southwesterly moderate to brisk winds, according to the Jordan Metrological Department (JMD).

On Wednesday, the Kingdom will be affected by a chilly air mass accompanied by a polar depression centered over northern Syria, pushing temperatures down and creating very cold and cloudy weather, the JMD added. Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and hail is forecast at times that might cause floods in valleys and low lands.

Snowfall is also forecast Wednesday night in the northern, southern and central mountainous areas. Winds will be westerly brisk with speed reaching 50-70 kilometers per hour and strong gust exceeding 80 Km/h, blowing dust in the desert areas and causing low visibility, the department noted.

Bitter cold and partly cloudy weather will continue to prevail on Thursday with a chance for light rain, while winds will be northwesterly brisk with strong gust reaching 60 Km/h. Clouds will gradually decrease in the afternoon as the weather will start to stabilize, the JMD further said.

Frost formation is also expected Thursday night, as temperatures will further plummet mainly in the highlands and the Badia regions, the JMD added.

Daytime temperatures expected for today in Amman will reach 11 degrees Celsius, 13 in the northern governorates and 9 in the southern cities, dropping down to 4, 5 and 2 degrees respectively. The weather will be warmer in the port city of Aqaba with highs reaching 22 degrees Celsius and lows standing at 12 at night, the JMD added.
