NATO Secretary-General, members laud Jordan's role

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stressed the need to strengthen cooperation with Jordan as a cornerstone for regional security.

In a meeting with His Majesty King Abdullah in the NATO Headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday, Stoltenberg and members of the Alliance, said on Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty, has a major role in cementing regional stability and countering terrorism and extremism, pointing out to the importance of the Aqaba Meetings in this regard.

They also pointed to the level of advanced partnership between Jordan and the NATO, which sees Jordan as an important friend in the Middle East, expressing their continued keenness to listen to His Majesty's visions of the regional situation.

The cooperation and partnership between Jordan and NATO in military and training fields and ways to build on joint agreements, especially the bilateral cooperation and partnership program related to building the Kingdom's defense capabilities were also discussed.

King Abdullah expressed appreciation for the nNATO's participation in the Aqaba Meetings, stressing the importance of continuing coordination of international efforts in the war on terror within a holistic strategy.

In another meeting with NATO members in the presence of the Alliance’s Secretary-General, relations of mutual cooperation in military and training fields were reviewed, as well as a number of issues in the Middle East.

The meeting also dealt with the peace process, as King Abdullah underlined the need to intensify efforts to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of a two-state solution, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

With regard to the Syrian crisis, the importance of reaching a political solution to the crisis, which preserves Syria's territorial integrity and people, and guarantees a safe return of Syrian refugees has been stressed.

The meeting touched upon the huge burdens borne by the Jordanian economy due to the Syrian refugee crisis and the need for the international community to assume its responsibilities in supporting host countries.
