King meets prime minister of Belgium

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II on Wednesday held talks with the Prime Minister of Belgium, Charles Michel, who stressed his country's keenness on supporting Jordan in its efforts to achieve security and stability in the region.

His Majesty and Belgian premier agreed to develop cooperation between the two countries in various fields, especially in the political and economic areas.

The 60-year-long relations between Jordan and Belgium were highlighted, as well as the need to maintain coordination and consultation on various regional and international issues, in the interest of their common interests, and to contribute to bolstering international peace and security.

During the talks, which were attended by His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah bin Ghazi, and a number of senior officials from both sides, His Majesty expressed appreciation for Belgium's role in supporting the Jordan's economy and development efforts.

His Majesty congratulated the Prime Minister of Belgium on the election of his country as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, stressing the importance of Belgium's role within the European Union and the UN Security Council in dealing with the region's main issues and its efforts to enhance Middle East security and stability.

Discussions also touched on the latest developments in the Middle East, especially the peace process between Palestinians and Israelis, where His Majesty stressed the need to intensify the international efforts aimed at pushing the peace process forward on the basis of the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Talks also tackled the challenges facing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). In this context, His Majesty praised the support provided by Belgium to support the UN agency in providing its services to refugees.

On the burdens of the Syrian refugee crisis on Jordan's economy, the King praised Belgium's support for the Kingdom in mitigating the consequences of this crisis.

His Majesty stressed the importance of the 3rd Brussels conference to be held April next year on supporting the future of Syria and the region.

The Prime Minister of Belgium praised Jordan's great efforts in hosting Syrian refugees.

The need to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis, which preserves Syria's territorial integrity and people, and guarantees a safe return of refugees to their homeland, was also discussed.

Ministers of foreign affairs, industry and trade, and the Jordanian Ambassador in Brussels attended the meeting.

On his arrival at the Egmont Palace in Brussels, His Majesty received an official reception ceremony, where he was received by Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel.

His Majesty the King and Prime Minister of Belgium reviewed the honor guard that was lined up to greet them.
