AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Ayman Safadi discussed with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, on Sunday developments in Syria and efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis that preserves the country's unity and stability and be accepted by the Syrian people.

In a phone call, the two ministers discussed the return of Syrian refugees to their country and the proposed Russian ideas to begin organizing this process.

Safadi and Lavrov emphasized on the effectiveness of Jordanian-Russian cooperation and keenness on maintaining the strong coordination between the two countries on efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis, its developments and other regional issues. They also discussed ways to develop these relations in various fields.

Both ministers reviewed developments in southern Syria, as Safadi briefed the Russian Foreign Minister on Jordan's decision to allow 422 Syrian citizens to pass through the Kingdom until they are resettled in western countries that made legally binding commitments to resettle them within three months.

Earlier, Jordan authorized the United Nations to organize the passage of 422 Syrian citizens on humanitarian grounds after Britain, Germany and Canada pledged to resettle them within three months.

These Syrian citizens were working in the civil defense in areas controlled by the opposition and fled to the occupied Golan Heights after the Syrian army's attack in those areas. The initial number of citizens was about 827 but was settled at 422.
