Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs Ayman Safadi and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday stressed the solid Jordanian-US relations, highlighting the importance of cooperation and coordination between the two countries in their joint efforts to achieve security and stability in the region.

During a meeting at the Foreign Ministry, the two ministers discussed the peace process, the Syrian crisis, the fight against terrorism, as well as other regional and international issues of common concern.

In a joint press conference, Safadi and Pompeo stressed the strong relations between the two countries and the need to intensify efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region. Safadi thanked his US counterpart for his country's support to the Kingdom, pointing out the recent memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries.

He said that the financial support provided by the United States to Jordan within the framework of this memorandum is essential in enabling Jordan to move forward in economic reform programs and in meeting its developmental and defense needs.

For his part, Pompeo affirmed the importance of the Jordanian-US relations. "Our partnership is fundamental for the two countries, and I want to underline the strong relations with Jordan and with His Majesty the King", he said "President Trump said when he received His Majesty the King at the White House we are committed to strengthening our solid ties with Jordan", Pompeo added, noting that supporting Jordan's security and stability is an important American interest and that its commitment to the Kingdom is solid.

He also asserted that the United States is proud to be the biggest supporter of Jordan in the economic and defense fields.

Safadi told reporters that the talks focused on ways of cooperation to resolve the regional crises that deprived the peoples of the region from their right to live in security, peace and stability, at the forefront of which is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which Jordan views as the main cause of regional tension and instability.

He added that the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the June 4, 1967 lines, is the only way to achieve peace, stressing the importance of breaking the deadlock in the peace process.

Jordan would continue to make every effort, in cooperation with its allies and friends of the international community, to a political horizon for the two-state solution, which remains the only option for peace.

"What is the alternative to the two-state solution? We can not stop efforts to achieve peace and there is no possible alternative to the two-state solution", Safadi said.

Pompeo said that when the United States recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, it did not take a position on the border, and will support the two-state solution if both sides agree to it, adding that the definition of borders and sovereignty in Jerusalem is up to negotiation.
