King meets Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe delegation

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II received at Al Husseiniya Palace on Thursday a delegation representing the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) at a meeting on Jordanian-European relations and the latest regional and international developments.

The meeting, attended by Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, Atef Tarawneh, focused on the importance of enhancing cooperation and partnership between Jordan and the EU in all fields, especially on the political and economic levels.

Discussions also touched on the large and increasing burdens imposed by the Syrian refugee crisis on the Kingdom.

In this regard, His Majesty stressed the need the international community assumes its responsibilities towards host countries to enable them to continue providing relief and humanitarian services to refugees.

On the peace process, King Abdullah stressed the necessity to intensify efforts aimed at re-launching negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis on the basis of the two-state solution, the Arab Peace Initiative and international legitimacy resolutions leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Challenges and crises facing the region and efforts to reach political solutions to them, in addition to endeavors in the war on terrorism within a holistic strategy were high on the agenda.

His Majesty warned against the phenomenon of Islamophobia and the danger of isolating Muslim communities in the West so as not to be exploited by terrorists as an excuse to feed their agendas.

For their part, the PACE delegation lauded the King's efforts in boosting partnership relations between Jordan and the EU, as well as his endeavors to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

The delegation also commended Jordan's humanitarian role in hosting refugees and providing their needs in the education, health and relief fields, pointing to the high level of cooperation between the Kingdom and international organizations working in the field of refugee assistance.

Jordan is scheduled to host a meeting organized by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on the situation of refugees, services extended to them in the country, as well as mechanisms to provide aid aimed to alleviate refugee burdens on the Kingdom.

Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh, Advisor to His Majesty the King, Director of His Majesty's Office Manar Dabbas, and a number of MPs attended the meeting.
