King, Turkish president hold talks in Ankara

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, on Wednesday visited Turkey where he held talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan focusing on the latest developments in Jerusalem's issue in light of the U.S. president's intention to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem.

The talks also focused on regional and international developments and ways of enhancing cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

The two leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening economic, trade, defense and cultural cooperation between Jordan and Turkey, as well as maintaining mutual coordination on all issues.

The visit comes in the context of the ongoing coordination between the two countries and follows consultations the two leaders made during the Turkish president's visit to the Kingdom in August, during which they discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations in various fields, issues of common concern and the latest developments in the region.

In joint press remarks following the extensive talks the two leaders held, His Majesty King Abdullah II emphasized that the Palestinian issue is the central issue in the region and that there is no alternative to the two-state solution. His Majesty stressed that Jerusalem is the key to any peace agreement and the key to stability for the entire region.

The King said he, Queen Rania and the accompanying delegation were happy to be in Ankara again following the Turkish president's successful visit to the Kingdom in August. He indicated the meetings he held with President Erdogan offers an opportunity to build on the historic and deep-rooted ties between the two countries, which will soon celebrate the 70th anniversary of establishment of bilateral relations, and expand ongoing political, economic and security cooperation.

"There is vast potential to increase trade and investment between us.

Based on today's meetings, I am looking forward to our ministerial level’s delegates to be able to take us into a new phase of relationship our nations," King Abdullah said.

He said today's visit comes amidst unfortunate regional developments that require close coordination and consultation between the two countries more than ever before.


In this context, His Majesty voiced appreciation's of the Turkish support to Jordan with regards to Jerusalem, underlining the close coordination between Jordan and Turkey to overcome tremendous challenges facing the nation and the region.

The King reiterated that the Palestinian cause continues to be the region’s central issues and said there is no alternative to the two-state solution.

" I re-emphasize to the U.S. president yesterday our concerns on the decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. Therefore it is imperative now to work fast to reach a final status solution and a peace agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis. This must allow the Palestinians to establish their independent state, side by side with Israel and with its capital in East Jerusalem", His Majesty indicated.


The King warned that Ignoring Palestinian Muslim and Christian rights in Jerusalem will only fuel further extremism and undermine the war against terrorism.

"We in Jordan, as the custodian of Islamic and Christian holy sites, we will persist in undertaking our religious and historical responsibilities towards Al-Aqsa Mosque/ Al-Haram al-Sharif and uphold our role in protecting Muslim and Christian holy places in Jerusalem," the King emphasized.


His Majesty also said: “We are both in full agreement on the need for holding an OIC summit on Jerusalem next week that would bring together Arab and Muslim leaders. “

On Syria, King Abdullah said efforts at this stage should be directed on building on the Astana talks to realize a political solution according to the Geneva process, and ensuring Syria’s unity, stability and safety for its people.
