Cabinet appoints remaining members of GAM, governorate councils

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Cabinet on Sunday appointed the members of the governorate councils and members of the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) Council, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

According to the decision, the members of the GAM include Yousef Shawarbeh, the outgoing GAM Committee president, Land Transportation Regulatory Commission Director General Salah Lozi, General Budget Department Director Mohammad Hazaimeh, Amman Chamber of Industry Deputy Chairman Adnan Ghieth, Amman Chamber of Commerce Deputy Chairman Ghassan Khirfan, Tourist Restaurants Association President Issam Fakhr Addin, Alaa Deiraniyah, Imad Hajarat and Ziad Rihani.

Article 3 (C) of the Municipalities Law 2015 stipulates that GAM's municipal council comprises elected heads of its local councils provided that they constitute 75 per cent of the council’s members.

It also stipulates that the Cabinet appoints the remaining number of the council’s members upon the recommendation of the minister and then selects Amman's mayor from among the members of the council members.

For governorate councils, the Cabinet appointed 45 members of the governorates councils including 17 women across the Kingdom.

According to the Decentralisation Law of 2016, Article 6 (D): The Cabinet shall appoint, as per the recommendation of the minister, no more than 15 per cent of the number of elected council members as members in the council, provided that one- third of this percentage is allocated to women.

A total of 6,622 men and women candidates competed for 2,444 seats during last Tuesday's twin local elections.
