King urges full cooperation between executive, legislative authorities

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II, on Sunday, urged full cooperation between the government and Lower House according to the constitution, which defines the government's general authority and underlines the legislature's oversight role.

He told heads of parliamentary blocs in a meeting at Al Husseiniyeh palace, attended by Prime Minister Hani al-Mulki and House Speaker Atef Tarawneh, that such relationship should be "positive and complementary", noting the Parliament's legislative and oversight roles.

The King said cooperation between the government and Lower House "enables us to improve the economic conditions and bring relief to the citizens", noting that all Jordanians share the responsibility "in this difficult stage", that requires to put the focus on economic priorities.

His Majesty also stressed the importance of upgrading legislative performance, and that all work as one team to strengthen the national economy and place the public interest above any other interests to meet economic goals and fight poverty and unemployment, the foremost challenge facing the country.

He called upon the government and Lower House to "positively work together" to pass economic and investment legislation "as quickly as possible".

The King vowed he would not tolerate any attempt by individuals or groups to hinder "our effort to move forward", expressing his satisfaction with the security situation in the country.

The meeting tackled regional developments, the King's visit to the US and Russia, the upcoming Arab Summit Jordan will host, the Palestinian issue, the Syrian crisis and support for national reconciliation in Iraq.

His Majesty said any move to revive the peace process and re-launch serious negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis should be based on the two-state solution, as the only path to end the conflict.

During the meeting, part of a series of encounters the King will hold with MPs, Prime Minister Mulki said his government is keen on full cooperation and coordination with the Lower House to address various challenges facing the Kingdom, foremost of which is the economy that requires decisions to boost financial and economic stability.

He said the government is serious about reforms and would thoroughly take decisions to push growth forward and protect low- and middle-income groups, and will investment legislation to boost a secure and investor-friendly atmosphere and jobs.

The Lower House Speaker described as "flexible and supportive" the house's relationship with the government, saying that the house understands the region's exceptional circumstances, which need the a collective effort to face them.

Also during the meeting, heads of parliamentary blocs aired their views on future action and cooperation with the government to bypass economic challenges and serve national interests.
