Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - There are around 1.4 million foreign workers in Jordan, including a million who are illegals, according to Ministry of Labour Spokesperson, Mohammad Khatib.

He told Petra that the ministry had issued around 400,000 work permits, adding that annual remittances of those expats, according to economists, amount to $1.5 billion.

"The ministry is devising a plan to study and regulate the labour market", said Khatib, noting that the scheme would also look into permits' fees among other issues.

Chairman of the Jordan Investors Association, Nabeel Ismael, emphasized the importance of qualifying Jordanians to work in the industrial sector.

He also said the rate of non-Jordanian workers in the industrial sector does not exceed 15 per cent, calling for a swift review of employment policy.
