Tarawneh: Refugees is Jordanian's biggest worry

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Lower House Speaker Atef Tarawneh said Sunday that the problem of refugees is haunting all Jordanians and that viable solutions had to be found to address the dilemma.

He said in a meeting with the European Union election observer mission, led by Joe Linen, that successive waves of refugees starting with the displacement of Palestinians over half a century ago and ending up with the Syrian refugee crisis, had placed huge burdens on the Kingdom in educational, social, political, security and economic spheres that outstripped its resources.

"It is high time that solutions are found to the refugees, particularly the Syrian refugee crisis, the largest and fastest among them all", the Lower House chief told the EU team, which presented its final report on Jordan's parliamentary elections held in September.

The House chief thanked countries, top of which is the European Union, for support provided to the refugees, but added that the aid offered to them so far only covered 30 per cent of the assistance being presented to the displaced Syrians.

The refugee issue, he pointed out, had become a top national priority although the Kingdom had a myriad of problems facing its people.

Linen, the senior EU election observer, said the EU had higher interests with Jordan and recognised the immense challenges the Kingdom had to bear for receiving many waves of refugees, particularly from Syria.

He reviewed the report on the September 20 parliamentary polls, which he described as well organised and were a good model to be emulated.
