Planning minister, UNHCR chief discuss international support to Jordan

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury on Monday, discussed with UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi, mechanisms of joint work to ensure that the international community would honor pledges it had made during the London donor conference.

During the meeting, Fakhoury highlighted the importance of coordination among all government agencies and UN organizations to enable the Jordanian private sector and industries to benefit form privileges offered to Jordan within the Jordan-EU agreement to facilitate the rules of origin.

The minister spoke about the impact of hosting a large number of Syrian refugees in the Kingdom, who are placing an increasing pressure on the budget as well as the water, education, health and energy sectors.

In this context, he urged the international community to provide direct support to the government to ease the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on Jordan's economy.

Fakhoury also reviewed the government's efforts to develop the Jordan Response Plan (JRP) 2017-2019 that is being carried out in partnership with UN organizations and donor countries.

The UNHCR chief praised the level of cooperation and coordination with the Jordanian government, stressing the UNHCR's keenness to help Jordan to continue its humanitarian role towards the refugees.
