IEC Commissioner, 20 percent of election candidates are women

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Twenty percent of candidates running in the 18th parliamentary elections are women, and this percentage is higher than that of the 2013 elections, according to the Independent Election Commission (IEC) Commissioner Samar Haj Hassan.

In a seminar on women and election on Tuesday, she pointed to measures that have been taken by the IEC to enable women to cast their votes, especially that the percentage of female voters stand at 52.9 percent.

Haj Hassan said that women account for 45 percent of the 10,000 volunteers who will help election officials during the electoral process, noting that 24 percent of the members of the committees that administer the polls are women.

"22 percent of committees are also headed by women and the percentage of women who work as data entry employees stands at 33 percent," the commissioner added.

Secretary General of the National Committee for Women Affairs Salma Al Nims said the committee looks forward, through enhancing the participation of women, to better promote the values of citizenship, justice and equality.
