Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Construction of a giant 60,000 seat World Cup stadium north of Qatar’s capital Doha, is to begin next month, the committee in charge of the Gulf state’s hosting of the global football tournament said last week.

Construction on a development that will house 2,700 workers is already underway, said in a statement on its website.

“We are excited for the next stage of work on al-Bayt Stadium to begin,” committee official Ghanim al-Kuwari said.

With a total area of around 11,600 square kilometers, Qatar will be the smallest country to host the World Cup. Most of its surface area is uninhabited desert, with the sprawling capital Doha home to much of its population.

Consequently, fans from the 32 competing nations will be staying within a relatively small area, which may give tournament organizers security and logistical headaches.
