Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Thursday met with Secretary General of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa(COMESA) Sindiso Ngwenya in the presence of Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply Maha Ali.

Ensour stressed the importance of boosting cooperation as well as trade exchange between Jordan and member countries of COMESA.

The prime minister reviewed Jordan's efforts to improve the economy, open new markets for Jordanian products, and attract investors from various world countries. He also discussed with COMESA secretary general means to forge closer trade ties between Jordan and COMESA members.

In 2007, Jordan signed with the Secretariat General of COMESA a cooperation memorandum that covered trade, economic, investment and tourism fields. Jordan was also accepted as observer to COMESA Secretariat General in November 2006.

Ngwenya said that COMESA is an important market as the population of its 20-member countries stand at 472.1 million with a GDP of $256 billion, noting that Jordanian products could be exported to COMESA members through the Red Sea.

He also praised the quality of Jordanian products and their ability to compete in various world markets.

The Kingdom's exports to COMESA states stood at JD218 million in 2014 while imports amounted to JD472 million.
