Salmah Hammad appointed as new interior minister

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A Royal Decree was issued on Tuesday, appointing Salameh Hammad as minister of interior, in pursuance of Article 35 of the Constitution, and upon the recommendation of Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour, a Royal Court statement said.

A Royal Decree was issued on sunday accepting the resignation of interior minister Hussein Majali and referring to retirement Public Security Department Director Gen. Tawfiq Tawalbeh and Gendarmerie Department Director Maj. Gen. Ahmad Sweilmin.

On Sunday, Ensour said that the minister’s resignation was a result of the lack of coordination among security organisations that include the public security and the Gendarmerie departments.

Hammad is known for administering the landmark 1989 parliamentary elections when he was secretary general of the Interior Ministry.

Born in Amman in 1944, Hammad served as interior minister from 1993-1995 and 1995-1996.
