Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The cabinet Sunday gave the green light for signing a memo of understanding with a Canadian firm to exploit shale oil by surface mining in southern Jordan.

The deal to be inked with Questerre Energy Corp is part of the government's interest in alternative energy and shale oil projects to develop local energy resources and reduce dependence on imported oil.

The company has expressed its interest to develop the shale oil distillation project in the southern Jafr region, which has estimated reservoirs of two billion barrels of crude shale oil.

The firm will carry out an initial assessment of the area of interest and offer proposals about the stages of the project as well as technical details, including geology, mining and exploration studies towards presenting a feasibility study to meet the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources criteria in shale oil ventures.
