Unemployment in Jordan reaches 12.3%

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The unemployment rate in Jordan stood at 12.3 per cent during the fourth quarter of last year compared to 11.4 per cent in the third quarter, the Anadolu Agency reported.

The Jordanian Department of Statistics said in a statement yesterday that the unemployment rate among males reached 10.9 per cent in the fourth quarter compared to 19.1 per cent for females in the same period.

The statement pointed out that the figures were particularly high among university graduates reaching 16.8 per cent.

According to the study, 24.1 per cent of unemployed males had bachelor's degrees compared to 76.1 per cent of females.

Fifteen to 19-year-olds recorded the highest level of unemployment: 35.4 per cent.

Competition for jobs has increased in Jordan over the past four years as a result of the entry of more than 1.4 million Syrian refugees into the kingdom.

Several years ago, the Jordanian government actioned a plan designed to replace foreign workers with the local workforce.

It is estimated that Jordan hosts more than 600,000 foreign workers working in various sectors, in particular agriculture, trade and construction.
