Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordanian military prosecutors have accused two detained Islamic activists linked to the Muslim Brotherhood group with "inciting dissent against the regime," the activists' lawyer said Wednesday.

"The National Security Court levied the charge against Bassem al-Rawabda and Thabet Assaf after they were found broadcasting [anti-regime] material online," lawyer Abdel-Qader al-Khatib told The Anadolu Agency.

He said military prosecutors had questioned the two men about a recent rally they had attended, which was organized by the Brotherhood to discuss the establishment of an umbrella group for Jordanian opposition movements.

Assaf was arrested several days ago outside the headquarters of the Islamist Labor Front party, the Brotherhood's political arm. Al-Rawabda was arrested at around the same time in eastern Amman.

The party has condemned the two activists' detention, asserting that the move was carried out in line with "foreign directives aimed at restricting the Islamic movement in Jordan."

According to the Brotherhood, the Jordanian authorities are currently holding 17 "political" prisoners.

Information Minister Mohamed al-Momni, for his part, insisted that the authorities were only holding individuals suspected of violating the law.

"Freedom of expression is guaranteed in the constitution, but there is a minority that only expresses itself by breaking the law," he said.
