King holds summit meeting with Egyptian president

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II on Thursday held a summit meeting with visiting Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on bilateral ties and the latest developments in the Middle East.

During the one-on-one meeting before they were joined by top aides, the King welcomed El-Sisi and hoped the visit would further boost the bilateral and strategic relations between the two countries.

During the talks, the two leaders stressed their keenness to enhance the cooperation relations and continue coordination on various issues, mainly in the economic and political domains.

King Abdullah reiterated Jordan’s full support to Egypt and its pivotal role in the region.

The Egyptian leader, meanwhile, thanked King Abdullah for his supportive stands in favour of Egypt and the Egyptian people, which the King affirmed during his recent visit to the US and during his summit meeting with US President Barack Obama.

Further, the two leaders discussed the latest regional and international developments and ways to deal with these developments, especially after the royal visit to the US and his meetings with top US officials.

King Abdullah and El-Sisi said it was important to have a holistic and strategic approach to fight terrorism and those who fight in the name of Islam, though they have little to do with Islam.

The two leaders said it was important to the true image and teachings of Islam that calls for tolerance and acceptance of others and rejects violence and extremism. They also underlined the key role played by Al Azhar Al Sharif as a minaret for the moderate Islam.

On the peace process, the two leaders asked all international powers to help a suitable environment to revive the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis and to bring down all barriers hindering the resumption of direct peace talks, which are based on the two-state solution, the international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

As for Jerusalem, they warned against attempts to change the status quo in the holy city. In this regard, King Abdullah affirmed that Jordan will continue to do its utmost to protect the city and its holy places as per the Hashemite custodianship of the holy places in Jerusalem.

While the two leaders stressed the importance of finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis, the Egyptian president said he appreciated the role played by Jordan to host Syrian refugees and provide them with their needs.

On Iraq, the King and the Egyptian president stressed the importance of enhancing the national accord among the different segments of the Iraqi people, reiterating support to the Iraqi government in its fight against terrorism.

The King later hosted a dinner banquet in honour of the visiting Egyptian president and his accompanying delegation.

The talks were attended by top officials from Jordan and Egypt.

King Abdullah later saw off the Egyptian president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi who concluded his few-hour official visit to the Kingdom.
