King meets US Secretary of State, Israeli prime minister

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II met Thursday evening with US Secretary of State John Kerry and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The trilateral meeting focused on ways to restore calm and defuse tension in Jerusalem and a proper climate to revive peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis.

The Israeli prime minister stressed Israel’s commitment to preserve the status quo in Jerusalem’s holy sites and respect the historical Hashemite Jordanian role in preserving the holy sites in the city.

His Majesty stressed Jordan’s position on the situation in Jerusalem that is based on the Hashemite custodianship on the holy shrines. He urged the Israeli side to take the necessary measures to preserve the status quo in the city, mainly at the Al Aqsa Mosque and the surrounding area.

Stressing the centrality of the Palestinian issue, King Abdullah highlighted the need for an urgent work with the support of the United States, all concerned parties as well as the international community, to remove obstacles facing peace efforts as well as the resumption of direct negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital.

During the trilateral meeting, the King discussed in a telephone call with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, the current situation in the Middle East, mainly efforts to achieve peace, the situation in Jerusalem as well as efforts to combat extremism and terrorist organizations.

The King voiced his strong condemnation of the terrorist attacks that targeted Egypt recently and stressed Jordan’s support to Egypt in confronting attempts that target its security and stability.
