Jordan: Israeli flag becomes doormat

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Israel's operation in Gaza has been denounced in Jordan almost since day one, with widespread demonstrations across the country urging the government to cut ties with the Israeli regime.

The Jordanian government also condemned the Israeli attacks and called for an immediate stop to the strikes in Gaza.

Anti-Israel sentiment took on an especially ugly form on Saturday when an Israeli flag was placed in the entrance of Ma'an city hall to be used as a doormat to wipe ones feet upon entering the building, Israeli news site Ynet reported.

The flag was placed right at the entrance in condemnation of "Israel's acts of massacre in Gaza."

"We saw fit as a local council to put the flag of the Zionists at the entrance to the building, so every person in Ma'an will step on it," the mayor said.

"It's the least we could do to express our support of the resistance in Gaza and our feelings on the tragedy the people there experience," he added.

Signs have also been placed on either side of the entrance emphasizing the suffering of the residents of Gaza. The signs said, among other things, "Step on the usurper Zionists' flag. Gaza - the honor of Arabs and symbol of pride."

Last week a TV host in Jordan burned a paper Israeli flag live on air during a discussion on the ongoing Gaza campaign, Jordanian site Ya Libnan reported.

Zoher al-Azzeh burned the flag on Jordan’s 7 Stars TV while describing the Israelis as "occupiers."

“For the sake of Palestine and its children, allow me to burn this filthy flag of the Zionist entity for the whole world to see”, al-Azzeh said before holding what appears to be an A4 paper print-off of the Israeli flag and setting light to it with a cigarette lighter.

“The world should know that the Zionists are our enemies. They are criminal murderers and we must fight them. We must demand that all Arab peoples expel them from their countries, starting with Jordan,” he added, concluding: “I spit on this flag!”

Jordanian Government spokesman Mohammad Momani said last month that the attacks that killed almost 2,000 Palestinians in Gaza were "barbaric."

"Jordan demands Israel stop all forms of escalation. The international community should actively intervene to stop the Israeli aggression," Momani said.
