Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Near East Council of Churches Committee for Refugee Work on Saturday endorsed a rapid response programme to provide aid to approximately 3,000 Syrian refugee families in the Petra district of the southern Maan Governorate.

The head of the committee, Farah Atallah, said in a statement that the response programme, part of the 2014 Syrian refugee aid project funded by the Action by Churches Together (ACT) Alliance, would be carried out in stages.

The first phase, he said, would begin on Monday in which 500 food parcels, clothes, and material needed for children and new-born babies would be handed out to 200 Syrian families in addition to designating a free medical day on Thursday for 500 women and children. The rapid response programme, which will be conducted in cooperation with local charities and organisations, also includes holding 14 training courses in the areas of health and nutrition, life skills, psychological support as well as workshops for NGOs on crisis management and planning gatherings of child and mother-support groups.

ACT is a global alliance of World Council of Churches and Lutheran World Federation member churches and related organizations, all committed to working for positive and sustainable change in the lives of people affected by poverty and injustice, through coordinated humanitarian, development and advocacy work.
