Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Interior Minister Hussein Majali led governors, civil society representatives and security officers at a meeting to discuss frequent cases of violations that had added further financial costs to the Disi water conveyance project.

Majali told the meeting that Disi, a multi-million-dollar project to draw water to Amman from the Disi aquifer 325 kilometres south of the capital, is a national venture "whose fruits will be reaped by various social segments." He said the project, which will supply the capital with 100 million cubic metres of water each year, should be safeguarded from any attacks or violations throughout all the phases of implementation.

"All national resources and achievements are the property of each citizen. Society should share the responsibility to protect these and stand up firmly against anyone trying to tamper with or sabotage these, particularly during the (current) tough economic phase we are going through," he told the meeting which was also attended by representatives of the firms carrying out the strategic mega venture.

He said the government could not afford any additional costs, restitution or damage that the project might incur as a result of such assaults that include water theft.

Majali urged all the stakeholders to find "effective cooperation and coordination methods" among local governors, public security, gendarmerie, civil society and the companies to address problems facing implementation.

Minister of water and irrigation Hazem Nasser also addressed the meeting and proposed setting up of "an institutional framework" whereby security forces would provide the necessary security environment at all the sites, while the ministry and the firms would provide security tools such as CCTV cameras and guards .
