Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A bushy brown mustache, glasses, a wig and a fedora hat may not be the best disguise for top political figures, but Israeli President Shimon Peres has revealed why he covered up back in the 1970s.

Posting the pictures of his disguise to Facebook on Friday, Peres said he had sported the look so as to travel undetected to Jordan for secret negotiations back when he was defense minister.

Peres posted the photos to coincide with the Jewish religious festival Purim, which features carnival costumes, fireworks and toy guns.

“This is the disguise I wore in the mid-seventies when I would go to my meetings with King Hussein of Jordan before signing the peace agreements.”

In one image, Peres appears sporting the mustache, an apparent wig and a beige fedora hat. Beneath it are two passport-style photos of him wearing glasses and a fake beard.

The president was defense minister in the mid-1970s, some two decades before Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994.

In a few hours after he posted it, the images received nearly 6,000 “likes.”
