Blast hits Egyptian gas pipeline, halting natural gas supply to Jordan

Ammon News - CAIRO A blast hit an Egyptian pipeline supplying gas to Jordan south of el- Arish in Sinai peninsula.
A security source said that it was not immediately known who was behind the attack, adding that preliminary investigations showed the attack was carried out by armed groups that opened fire at security checkpoints in Rafah and Sheikh Zweid.
The pipeline has been attacked more than 10 times since 2011.
Egyptian gas supplies to the Kingdom came to a halt after the attack on a pipeline in the Egyptian city of el-Arish early Sunday, an official source in the energy sector said.
The source told Petra that the Egyptian side informed Jordan that it was assessing the situation and the damage caused by the attack on the pipeline that took place 17 kilometers south of el-Arish in the Sinai Peninsula.
The pipeline carrying Egyptian gas to Jordan was attacked 15 times last year, causing disruption to gas supplies to the Kingdom that stand at 100 million cubic feet a day and is used to generate electricity in the Kingdom.( Petra)
