Downtown protest blasts govt, regime policies

14-06-2013 04:43 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Hundreds of demonstrators took the streets of downtown Amman on Friday blasting the Jordanian regime for what they described as measures to further "impoverish citizens" through economic policies that will lead to more price hikes.

The demonstration launched following Friday midday prayers in front of Al Husseini Grand Mosque in downtown Amman and marched towards the Nakhil Square chanting unprecedented harsh slogans against the government and the regime.

The march was called for by the "Coalition of Jordanian Tribes" and the Islamist movement, blasting the government's recent proposal to lift electricity subsidies amid difficult economic conditions afflicting the kingdom.

Protesters expressed rejection of any measure to raise electricity prices and basic staple goods.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour's government has been attempting for weeks to gain support from the Parliament to lift electricity subsidies, but faced apposition from a majority of Members of the Lower House of Parliament who called on the government to consider alternative measures to raising prices.
