Amman signs 'Sister-city' agreement with San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO - To further the ties of friendship and understanding between San Francisco and Amman Jordan, and to affirm their mutual aspiration to work in unison for the benefit of their cities and nations, Mayor Gavin Newsom and the Honorable Omar Maani, Mayor of the City of Amman, today signed a declaration strengthening ties and establishing a sister city relationship between the two cities. This declaration marks the 17th sister city for San Francisco and City’s first in an Arabic-speaking country.

“San Francisco has an established international reputation for economic innovation and cultural diversity,” said Mayor Newsom.

“Our sister city relationship with Amman will expand our relationships throughout the world and forge new and stronger cultural and economic ties across peoples and borders.”

“Our new Sister City partnership will help strengthen ties between the citizens of San Francisco and Amman,” said Kamel Ayoub, Honorary Consul of Jordan in San Francisco, and the Chairman of the newly formed San Francisco-Amman Sister City Committee.

“We look forward to working together to promote trade, tourism, and business between our two cities in the years to come.”

The declaration establishes that the City of San Francisco and the City of Amman, on the basis of friendly cooperation, equality and mutual benefit, will work together
to promote and broaden the cultural, academic and economic relations between the two cities.

Both Mayors reaffirmed their commitment to work together to carry out exchanges in such fields as science, medicine, environmental technology, commerce, art and culture,
public health, sports, tourism and others to promote prosperity and contribute toward the development of deeper bonds of mutual understanding between the citizens of the respective cities.

    Congratulation to Amman and to San Francisco. It was a day of tremendous pride to the Jordanian Community in San Francisco. Now it is time for action!
