IAF: Dissolving parliament chance for govt to pass what it wishes

25-11-2009 12:00 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The government will take advantage of the dissolution of the House of Deputies to implement certain laws away from any monitoring or scrutiny, said Hamza Mansour, head of the Islamic Action Front (IAF) bloc in the dissolved House.

In a statement posted on the IAF website, Mansour expressed that dissolving the House came as a consequence of prevailing political and economic conditions in Jordan and the region in general.

He described the electoral law in Jordan as "backward" and does not live up to Jordanian people's aspirations in electing deputies who would truly represent their interests.

Mansour criticized the performance of the House in the past period for its complicity with government's actions, and said that despite the relative performance improvements in the past few months in forming committees to scrutinize and question government actions, yet despite attempts to improve its image, the house “did not and will not.. live up to people’s lowest expectations in having true representation.”

Mansour called for a progressive electoral law that would realize the will of the Jordanian people and also called for the government and its executive apparatuses to "lift their hands off the electoral process" by introducing a new electoral law and providing a monitoring entity to oversee the elections and guarantee transparency and impartiality.

Regarding the IAF's participation in the upcoming elections, Mansour said that it is still early to speak of the party's participation especially that an election date has not been set yet and no decision has been made about what type of electoral law would administer the elections.

IAF had issued a statement on Tuesday expressing its hopes that dissolving the House would be a beginning for comprehensive political reform based on the free will of the Jordanian people.

The statement also called for implementing a progressive electoral law that overcomes the "partial vote law" known as the "one-vote law," which according to the IAF's expression, had proved to be inequitable and unable to produce a House of Deputies on the level of national responsibility.

The statement alluded to what took place in the last elections of legal violations and the partiality of the executive branch that oversaw the process, “producing a House susceptible to constant public criticism."

The past experience, the statement said, "compels us to call for holding upcoming parliamentary elections characterized by impartiality, transparency and integrity."
