Foreign assistance to Jordan in H1 totals $465mln

AMMONNEWS - Jordan received a total of $465.4 million in foreign aid and grants in the first halt of the current year, according to figures by the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation.

Foreign aid includes all regular grants, additional grants to confront the new coronavirus pandemic, soft loans, and other grants channeled to support the general budget and to implement development projects in communities hosting refugees.

The data showed that South Korea is one of the largest donors to the Kingdom, providing $6 million to develop technical educational programs in Karak and Irbid and $9.2 million to improve water supply in Faqu district in Karak.

Other funding includes $3.6 million by the United Nations Development Program to establish the first-ever largest permanent exhibition to promote the products of Jordan Badia and its adjacent rural areas

With regard to soft loans, the data revealed that the World Bank had extended a $163-million loan to a youth, entrepreneurship and technology project, in addition to a $20-million loan to finance a COVID-19 response plan.

Also, the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development has extended a $39.1-million loan to finance a sanitation network project in the Jerash governorate.

It is expected that Jordan will receive a total of about JOD2.5 billion in foreign aid and loans in 2020, the ministry said.
