Unemployment rate rises to 18.7% in Jordan

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Unemployment in Jordan has risen to 18.7 per cent during the second quarter of the year from 18.4 per cent in the first quarter, the Anadolu Agency reported the Jordanian Department of Statistics revealing.

In the second quarter of 2017, the unemployment rate in Jordan was 18 per cent and rose to 18.5 per cent in the last quarter of the same year.

There are more women who are out of work than men, according to the statistics, with 26.8 per cent of females seeking employment compared to 16.6 per cent of males.

Meanwhile, unemployment among university graduates reached about 23.5 per cent.

In a report issued in April last year, the World Bank said the labour market in Jordan faces many challenges, as well as strong competition due to the influx of Syrian labourers.

There are 1.3 million Syrians in Jordan, about half of them are registered as refugees with the UN.
