Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan condemned the opening today of Paraguay's embassy in Jerusalem as a violation of the United Nations Charter and relevant international legitimacy resolutions.

Minister of State for Media Affairs and official government spokesman, Mohammad Momani, said the embassy move is null and void and has no legal effect, stressing that East Jerusalem is the capital of the state of Palestine.

"Jordan's position is consistent with its categorical rejection of the relocation to Jerusalem of any embassy to Israel, as such a move constitutes a unilateral action that has no legal effect and is condemned by Jordan and rejected by the majority of world nations," he said.

He said world rejection of the US embassy move to Jerusalem was manifest when 128 countries voted against it at the UN General Assembly and in a UN Security Council vote, where the majority of nations opposed it.

The government spokesman pointed out that it is the duty of states to support the resolutions of the UN General Assembly and international legitimacy on Jerusalem and the Palestinian issue, not to violate them and encourage the perpetuation of occupation, violence and chaos.

He urged adherence to the international legitimacy resolutions, notably Security Council resolution 478, which demanded that all countries refrain from transferring their embassies in Israel to Jerusalem.

East Jerusalem is an occupied city under the international legitimacy resolutions and the international law, and that any tampering or prejudice to the status quo is a provocation to the feelings of Muslims and Christians around the world, Momani said.

The spokesman stressed that such individual and unilateral decisions are irresponsible and would entrench the violence and chaos in the region, ratchet up tension around the world and encourage Israel to persist in violating international law and international legitimacy resolutions.

He reiterated Jordan's call for launching serious and effective efforts to revive the peace process and start real negotiations within a specific timeline, pointing out the need for concerted efforts by the international community to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions that guarantees the setting up of an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital along the lines of June 4, 1967, to restore peace and security to holy Jerusalem among Muslims, Christians, Jews and to the entire region.
