Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Seeking to raise awareness about the importance of reducing waste production and lead a more sustainable life, two women in the UAE have joined forces to wear garbage they produce for a whole month.

The duo’s awareness campaign began on March 24, which coincided with Earth Hour, and they intend to keep up the fashion till Earth Day on April 22.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, the two girls, Marita Peters and Mariska Nell, explained that they have been trotting Dubai with their see-through plastic robes, and a trolley full of waste.

While the two carry a hefty load of garbage for the ordinary eye, Peters held a few pieces of waste in comparison to Nell.

According to Peters: “I am the conscious one, living a more sustainable life trying to refuse, reduce and reuse to minimize the amount of trash. I have been carrying reusable items like cutlery, cups etc. and packing all my groceries, fresh produces with zero packaging.”

The duo have also been sharing their journey on social media.

A recent survey revealed that each visitor at the UAE’s famous Dubai Mall generates over half a kilo of waste per visit.
The UAE has one of the highest waste generation rates.

According to studies done in 2016, each person in the country produces an average of 2.3 kilograms of waste every day, while Dubai generates 8,200 tons of municipal solid waste per day which is 15 percent above the global average.

Dubai has set a target of zero landfill waste by 2030.
