Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Prime Minister Hani Mulki said Jordan, which is assuming a national and humanitarian duty toward Syrian refugees on behalf of the international community, can no longer withstand more of the pressure they pose on the infrastructure, health, education and water sectors and on the host communities.

He said at a meeting with visiting UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi, that Jordan is keen to ensure a decent life for all those living on its lands, but, simultaneously, there are economic limitations that make it incumbent upon donors and the entire world to assist the country in order to continue providing basic services to the refugees.

The refugee crisis is no longer just a humanitarian and aid issue, but there are economic and social ramification and a security cost that should be taken into account, Mulki said.

He said the Kingdom's northern and northeastern border is a closed military zone, adding that "our security is above any other consideration" and stressing that Jordan is a key factor in regional security.

The prime minister said Jordan looks for further coordination with the UNHCR and other concerned international agencies to urge the world community to help it bear the burden of the Syrian refugee issue.

Grandi said the UNHCR understands the pressure and challenges Jordan endures from the Syrian refugee crisis, and said "we will raise our voice high that this is an ongoing problem with economic, social and security repercussions, not just a humanitarian matter".

He urged the world community and donors to live up to their pledges to Jordan. He also noted the "progress" made in the conditions of Syrian refugees in the Kingdom.
