Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A man in Turkey was fined earlier this week after he declared to his wife that he does not love her, the Daily Sabah news website reported.

In a landmark case, the Turkish Supreme Court of Appeals ruled that saying “I don't love you” to a spouse is tantamount to emotional violence, the news website reported.

The couple, who have been embroiled in a lengthy divorce case, have been seeking compensation from each other over insults that reportedly flooded their clashes.

A lower court had ruled the wife was at fault for refusing to pay compensation for insulting her husband.

However, the Supreme Court of Appeals considered claims that saying “I don’t love you” had left her “emotionally wrecked.” The husband said she constantly “cursed” him.

Following the brutal death of a female student in Istanbul earlier this month, authorities have been tracking violence against women.

While emotional or psychological violence is harder to prove in court than physical violence, offences could carry a prison term of up to three years, the Daily Sabah reported.
