Ambassador Wells Visits Salt For Economic, Cultural Discussions

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - U.S. Ambassador Alice G. Wells visited Salt today where she met with Balqa governorate public officials including Governor Saleh Al-Shoshan and Mayor of Salt Eng. Khalid Al-Khishman. They discussed issues of common interest, including investment opportunities, job creation, and women’s empowerment.

The visit included a walking tour to the Al-Hammam souk, built at the end of the 19th century and a vital part of Salt’s heritage; the Historic Old Salt Museum-Abu Jaber House, which documents the city’s historical importance; and Al-Khader shrine, founded in 1682. The Ambassador noted: “Salt’s heritage comes alive through its lively markets, beautiful architecture and enterprising people. I am thrilled to see how the people of Salt respect their history and are working together to forge a prosperous future.”

Ambassador Wells also visited Zamanakya Salt coffee shop-restaurant-bazar, the first woman-owned restaurant in Salt. Nadia Abu Al-Sammen started her project in 2010 with a grant from the USAID Jordan Tourism Development Project. ZamanekyaSalt is part of an initiative that encourages tourists to explore Salt and taste traditional meals prepared by local women. To commemorate International Persons with Disability Day, Ambassador Wells also toured the Holy Land Institute for the Deaf and donated Arabic language children’s books to their library.
