King Appoints Nsour Prime Minister to Succeed Tarawneh

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - King Abdullah on Wednesday appointed Abdullah Nsour as prime minister to succeed Fayez Tarawneh.

A Royal Decree was issued Wednesday accepting the resignation of Tarawneh's government.

Another Royal Decree was issued appointing Nsour, a former member of parliament, as Prime Minister.

The King issued directives to Nsour to form a new government.

The resignation of Tarawneh's government came in accordance with Article 74 of the amended Jordanian Constitution, which stipulates the resignation of the government within one week of the dissolution of parliament.

The law also stipulates that the Prime Minister in office at the time of parliament's dissolution may not head the succeeding government.

King Abdullah had dissolved the parliament last Thursday and called for early elections.

ABDULLAH NSOUR

Nsour is a veteran politician, born in Salt in 1939, and holds a Ph.D. degree in Planning.

He was elected member of House of Representatives from 1989-1997, and again in the 16th parliament in 2010.

He was also appointed Senator from 1997-2001, and again from 2009-2010.

Nsour held several ministerial positions, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Industry and Trade, Higher Education, Education Minister, Planning, Administrative Development, and Minister of State for media affairs and communications and deputy prime minister.

He also headed several academic positions, including Chairman of the Zaytouna University Board of Trustees, and Deputy Chair at Al Balqaa, Hashemiyyah, Jordan University for Science and Technology, and the University of Jordan.

Nsour was also Board Chairman of the Cement Corporation, Vice-President of the Phosphates Company, and permanent Representative to UNESCO in Paris.
