AMMONNEWS - UN deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey announced on Friday that the former Algerian foreign minister and longtime UN official Lakhdar Brahimi will replace former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan as joint UN-Arab League envoy to Syria.

"Diplomacy to promote a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Syria remains a top priority for the United Nations," del Buey said at a media briefing at UN Headquarters in New York.

"More fighting and militarization will only exacerbate the suffering and make more difficult the path to a peaceful resolution of the crisis which would lead to a political transition in accordance with the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people," he added.

"The Secretary-General takes this opportunity to reiterate his deepest gratitude to former Secretary-General Kofi Annan for his selfless efforts and contributions to the search for peace in Syria," the spokesperson noted.

First things first, Eid Fitr Mubarak to Ammon and to all Jordanians. Second, Brahimi and all his supporters are likely to be disappointed. The real actors in Syria are Russia, Assad/Ba'ath and the Free army. Russia is the real obstacle for change in Syria. Moscow is determined to avoid "losing" Syria after it "lost" Iraq and Libya. The only hope for ending soon the bloodshed in Syria is for the national army to side with the free army!
