37 New Peace Corps Volunteers Sworn In

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - U.S. Ambassador to Jordan Stuart E. Jones today swore in 37 new Peace Corps volunteers at Al al Bayt University in Mafraq. The volunteers are set to begin their two-year assignments in education and youth development projects throughout the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The group just completed two and a half months of training at Al al Bayt University, which focused on Arabic language skills and culture as well as adapting skills. Trainees lived with Jordanian families and had the opportunity to be immersed in Jordanian culture.
Volunteers will live and work in various parts of the Kingdom and be assigned to Ministry of Education schools, Ministry of Social Development Special Education Centers, Ministry of Youth and Sport Youth centers, public universities, and Princess Basma Centers.
The Peace Corps-Jordan program was established in 1996. Since then, nearly 500 volunteers have served in the Kingdom. There are currently 33 volunteers working in support of three projects:
TEFL (Teaching of English as a Foreign Language): Volunteers co-teach with their Jordanian counterparts in primary and secondary schools and participate in projects to enhance the capacity of local teachers.
Special Education: Volunteers assist students with special needs through developing social awareness campaigns, developing teaching /training materials, and conducting caregiver training.
Youth Development: Volunteers promote healthy lifestyles, increase organizational capacity and encourage leadership and volunteerism among the Jordanian youth.
