Ammon News - AMMONNEWS — 'Climb for Cancer', a non-profit charitable initiative that encourages hikers and adventure enthusiasts to climb mountain peaks around the world in support of children suffering from cancer, is raising funds for two pediatric cancer patients at the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC).

As part of ‘Climb for Cancer’, a team of 12 climbers will head to Nepal on November 4, 2011 to embark on two challenges, trekking to the magnificent Everest Base Camp (5,540m) and climbing the more technical Island Peak (6,189m) to raise over US$200,000 for the treatment of Huda, a 10 year old Iraqi girl suffering from Neuroblastoma, a nerve and tissue cancer that originates in the adrenal glands, and Ahmad, a 4 year old boy from Palestine suffering from Leukemia.

Nizar Fakhoury, Founder of ‘Climb for Cancer’, stated, “This year our goal is to help treat two underprivileged pediatric cancer patients while aiming to raise their combined treatment costs of $202,000. Four members of the 'Climb for Cancer' team visited and met the cancer patients they are supporting at the KHCC. It always helps to put things into perspective when you meet the children you are climbing for. They are the essence behind our challenges and they are our driving force every step of the way.”

“We are extremely excited about this new challenge and have set up a website (www.firstgiving.com/climbforcancer) to raise awareness and funds through corporate sponsors, colleagues, friends, family and anyone from the public who wishes to contribute to the treatment of these wonderful children”, added Fakhoury.

The team of climbers is made up of adventure enthusiasts from Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom. The challenge will last for 14 days and will be a true test of the team's physical and emotional capabilities.

The 'Climb for Cancer' team's first attempt was to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m), Africa’s highest peak, in September 2010. All six members of the team successfully reached the summit during their seven day challenge, and in the process the team was able to raise $129,000 towards the treatment of two pediatric cancer patients at the KHCC.

On a recent visit to KHCC, HRH Princess Noor Asem and Reem Shaath, two new members of the 'Climb for Cancer' team, had the opportunity to meet Huda and Ahmad.

“We have started approaching friends and family to raise awareness and funds for the plight of these wonderful children, and the response has been enormous!” said HRH Princess Noor Asem.

“Sometimes, all you need is to look at things with a different eye, and everything you worry about seems minuscule compared to what these children have to go through,” said Reem Shaath.

In addition to the climbing challenges and the many local and regional events they have planned to bring awareness to their cause, ‘Climb for Cancer’ is also organizing a ladies lunch and a charity concert to help raise money for the cancer patients.
