Ammon News - Dead Sea - Under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Royal Scientific Society will co-host an international conference on sustainable energy policy from 6-7 November.

Entitled "The Quest for a Sustainable Energy Policy in the Middle East and North Africa", the two-day meeting at the Dead Sea will bring together experts from ten countries in the region, as well as specialists from Germany and France, to discuss renewable energy policies, challenges and potential solutions.

The conference will highlight various issues including: the challenges of climate change and the response of energy policies in the Middle East and North Africa, the political economy of renewable energies, the risks and potential of nuclear energy programs and the future of slated mega projects such as Desertec, Transgreen and the Solar Plan for the Mediterranean.

The gathering aims to come up with recommendations for the development of a sustainable energy mix in the MENA region by building on existing regional initiatives and by supporting the exchange of information.

Decision-makers from around the region are also being invited to attend and to contribute to discussions on promoting the implementation of sustainable policies.

Under a 25-year old co-operation agreement, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung has organized several joint initiatives with the Royal Scientific Society and published a number of collaborative studies.

In 2006, the two bodies’ first collaborative energy conference set the programme for Jordan’s ambitious strategies in the sector. Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung is Germany’s oldest socio-political NGO.
